Meet the War Eagles.

"Rising Above, Soaring Together"

At Compass Orange Mound, every scholar is seen, known, and loved. Each scholar is supported in their learning and their development. We have a rigorous curriculum, experienced teachers, monthly community celebrations, exposure to new things, and a strong character program. In addition to our morning meeting, scholars receive classroom guidance lessons from our school counselor every week.

Another pillar of our school is service learning, and scholars are encouraged to give and serve others inside and outside of our school community. Scholars are invited to participate in quarterly incentive trips, educational experiences off campus, college tours per semester, and various activities throughout the school year. We partner with local organizations to bring the best experiences to our scholars, on and off campus.

Finally, scholars are encouraged to be brave and operate in excellence. In our founding year, we focused on our rally cry, “Be Brave. Make History.” Moving forward, our motto is “Learning and Serving In Excellence.” As a staff, we believe in modeling the way for scholars and showing them the opportunities available if they put forth their best effort and persevere.

Dear Compass Orange Mound Parent,

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am Dr. Morticia Brooks-Taylor and am exceptionally excited to serve as your principal. With more than 22 years of experience in education, I have been fortunate to serve in various capacities, including as a teacher, Title I Facilitator, Professional Learning Communities Coach, and Performance Improvement Team (PIT) district-wide coach. I have provided professional development and support for countless educators and administrators while supporting new teachers, learning coaches, master teachers, and new teacher mentors. Additionally, I was a curriculum writer for K-5 mathematics and most recently led the 25th largest district in America’s work around student recruitment, alumni, and multicultural engagement. I wholeheartedly believe that
every child deserves a high-quality, well-rounded education that prepares them for success, and that happens when we all work together in the children’s best interests. That is my responsibility, and that is my pledge to you.

So, as we continue to strive for excellence in education and maintain open lines of communication, I am beyond pleased to welcome you to our Compass Orange Mound website. Our school’s website is a digital gateway to our vibrant academic community. It is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of our school’s mission, vision, and values. I believe that effective communication between the school, parents, students, and the broader community is essential for the overall growth and success of our scholars.

I encourage you to explore our website and take advantage of its valuable resources. Your feedback is essential to us, so please do not hesitate to let us know how we can further improve our website to meet your needs.

Thank you for being an integral part of the Compass Orange Mound family. Together, we can nurture a positive and engaging learning environment that empowers our students to excel both academically and personally.

Best regards,

Morticia Brooks-Taylor, Ed.D., Principal

Our Team

Be Brave. Make History.

Our staff loves every scholar and we are committed to their growth and development. We believe parents are our partners and have an open door policy when it comes to our scholar’s education. We call our students “scholars” because we believe that every scholar “can” and “will” learn as well as have upstanding character. We have a small scholar population which allows every staff member to know every child. This allows every scholar to be seen, known and loved.

Academics

Passion for Teaching

Compass teachers know their content backwards and forwards and are passionate about preparing Memphis youth academically and in character for college and lifelong success. Our teachers enjoy and benefit from our intentionally small school settings, which will help them to develop trusting, positive relationships with their students and colleagues.

Service Learning

Agents Of Change

Service-learning projects provide students with opportunities to apply newly learned knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, further cementing their understanding and giving their academic learning relevant purposes. Service learning serves as the intersection of our academic excellence and values-based character education pillars—bringing content, concepts, and skills gleaned from both to life through hands-on, tangible experiences.
