Meet the Panthers.

Reach New Heights & Set New Records!

Compass-Berclair is a supportive, joyful, and hopeful school tucked away off Summer Ave. We strive to make our school like a family, and all scholars are excited to enter it each day! As we begin the 2024-2025 school year, we want to build upon our Panther PAWS: Practicing Kindness, Acting Responsibly, Working Hard, and Serving Others.

With the TVASS 5 designation for the past two years, we look forward to seeing our scholars grow academically and learn about who they are and who they want to be. We are excited to set new records this year. Go Panthers!

Letter in Spanish

Dear Compass-Berclair Students and Families,

Welcome to the new school year at Compass Community Schools-Berclair Campus! My name is Kamie Cowan, and I am the principal. I am entering my third year as principal and fifth year at our wonderful campus. I have been married for ten years and have two children. I began to call Memphis home 12 years ago, and I am so thankful that I continue to be an educator at Compass-Berclair.

Compass’s vision statement states that our schools will be “supportive, joyful, and hopeful.” This vision statement is at the forefront of all we do at Compass-Berclair, and you can see it in how we support one another, our students, and our families. I know the 2024-2025 school year will be one of continued growth, deeper relationships, and support for one another.

Our theme for this year is “Reach New Heights & Set New Records.” We are excited about our past 2 years as a TVAAS 5 school, which shows that we have made significant academic growth throughout the school. Also, we had 30% of MLL scholars test out of the WIDA assessment last year. Amazing!

A few ways that we can “Team Together To Reach New Heights” this year are:

  1. Sign up for Dojo and PowerSchool so you can check what is happening on campus daily, and our staff can answer any questions.
  2. Read each night with your scholars to help reinforce new skills and build fluency. When they finish each page, ask them what they read and what happened.
  3. Arrive before 8:00 a.m. so scholars may attend the morning meeting every day. This is a fun time where scholars can build “family” within the classroom.

As always, I am here to support you in any way. Feel free to contact me via email (kcowan@compassmemphis.org) and/or phone (901-323-2162) any time.

Once again, welcome back! Let’s make this year one to remember together.

Warmly,

Kamie Cowan, Principal
Compass-Berclair

Curriculum

Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need for success in college, and beyond. As a charter school, we have the freedom to select a curriculum that allows us to do just that. For grades K-5, we work with CKLA English, Ready Math, Inspire Science and Studies Weekly Social Studies. For grades 6-8, we offer Wit & Wisdom English, Ready Math, iScience and McGraw Hill Social Studies. All grades participate in Spark P.E. and Flex Art.

Extracurricular

We believe a world-class education is more than just academics. That is why we make sure extracurricular activities are available to all of our students. As of now, we offer Music, Physical Education and Scholar Leadership Guidance for every child K-8. We also partner with Soccer Ole who facilitates our soccer program for any child interested.

Extended Hours

At this time, we do not offer before or after school care due to lack of interest.

Academics

Passion for Teaching

Compass teachers know their content backwards and forwards and are passionate about preparing Memphis youth academically and in character for college and lifelong success. Our teachers enjoy and benefit from our intentionally small school settings, which will help them to develop trusting, positive relationships with their students and colleagues.

Service Learning

In the Community

Service-learning projects provide students with opportunities to apply newly learned knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, further cementing their understanding and giving their academic learning relevant purposes. Service learning serves as the intersection of our academic excellence and values-based character education pillars—bringing content, concepts, and skills gleaned from both to life through hands-on, tangible experiences.
