Meet the Panthers

Building Scholars Into Leaders

Compass Berclair is unique, because we are a family of learners and teachers working together to provide an equitable and quality education to our scholars. We are the Panthers and we model our Panther norms daily to all stakeholders on our campus: Positive, Accountable, Nice, Team Player, Helpful, Eager, Respectful and Scholars.

Dear Compass-Berclair Students and Families,

Welcome to the new school year at Compass Community Schools- Berclair Campus! My name is Kamie Cowan, and I am the principal. I am entering my second year as principal and my fifth year of being at our wonderful campus. I have been married for nine years and have two children. I began to call Memphis home eleven years ago and am so thankful that I get to call Compass-Berclair the place I continue to be an educator.

Compass’s vision statement says our schools will be “supportive, joyful, and hopeful.” This vision statement is at the forefront for all of us at Compass-Berclair in supporting one another, our students, and our families. The 2023-2024 school year will be one of continued growth, deeper relationships, and supporting one another.

This school year, our focus is on connection and communication. Oprah Winfrey said it best: “Great communication begins with connection.” We have included many pieces where you can connect with our scholars and staff members this year. Look at the calendar when it is sent home and connect on Dojo. It will be our primary way to communicate.

As always, I am here to support you in any way. Feel free to contact me anytime via email (kcowan@compassmemphis.org) or phone (901-323-2162).

Once again, welcome back! Let’s make this year one to remember together.

Warmly,

Kamie Cowan (Principal, Compass-Berclair)

Grade Model

Curriculum

Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need for success in college, and beyond. As a charter school, we have the freedom to select a curriculum that allows us to do just that. For grades K-5, we work with CKLA English, Ready Math, Inspire Science and Studies Weekly Social Studies. For grades 6-8, we offer Wit & Wisdom English, Ready Math, iScience and McGraw Hill Social Studies. All grades participate in Spark P.E. and Flex Art.

Extracurricular

We believe a world-class education is more than just academics. That is why we make sure extracurricular activities are available to all of our students. As of now, we offer Music, Physical Education and Scholar Leadership Guidance for every child K-8. We also partner with Soccer Ole who facilitates our soccer program for any child interested.

Extended Hours

At this time, we do not offer before or after school care due to lack of interest.

Academics

Passion for Teaching

Compass teachers know their content backwards and forwards and are passionate about preparing Memphis youth academically and in character for college and lifelong success. Our teachers enjoy and benefit from our intentionally small school settings, which will help them to develop trusting, positive relationships with their students and colleagues.

Service Learning

In the Community

Service-learning projects provide students with opportunities to apply newly learned knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, further cementing their understanding and giving their academic learning relevant purposes. Service learning serves as the intersection of our academic excellence and values-based character education pillars—bringing content, concepts, and skills gleaned from both to life through hands-on, tangible experiences.
