In July 2019, Compass Community Schools opened six high-quality charter schools (five elementary and one middle/high) in the Memphis communities of Binghampton, Berclair, Frayser, Hickory Hill, Midtown, and Orange Mound.  We focus intently on three pillars – academic excellence, values-based character education, and service learning in the community – as we prepare our students for college and life-long success.

Position Overview

Compass Community Schools seeks a Principal for the 2025-26 school year who will lead our school with a relentless focus on achieving the highest standards of excellence.  As the school’s primary instructional leader, the principal will support teachers’ efforts to provide children with high-quality learning experiences every minute of every day.  This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and committed educational leader to prepare Memphis youth academically and in character for college and life-long success.  

Primary Responsibilities

⦁Foster a school community that focuses on three pillars – academic excellence, values-based character education, and service learning in the community – to prepare students for college and life-long success.

⦁Working in tandem with the Head of School to develop a supportive, joyful, hopeful, and safe school culture with high expectations for students’ individual and collective success.

⦁Provide leadership for all aspects of instructional leadership, including instructional quality, school culture, use of data, talent management, and professional development.

⦁Claim ownership of the privilege and responsibility to ensure high levels of student learning.

⦁Hold teachers accountable for high standards of excellence while providing high-quality support to help them meet them.

⦁Carefully monitor school performance via frequent classroom observations, walkthroughs, and in-depth data analysis to identify areas of strength and improvement opportunities. 

⦁Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to teachers to help them continuously improve.

⦁Ensure that instructional lessons are consistently standards-based, objective-driven, and effectively delivered with an urgent focus on individual student mastery.

⦁Communicate regularly with families as partners in the education of their children.

Qualifications

⦁Affinity with, and passion for, the compelling vision of Compass Community Schools

⦁Proven success in raising academic achievement for students from low-income backgrounds

⦁Ability to lead a team towards high-performance levels in pursuit of the Compass vision

⦁Strong ability to plan strategically and then execute these plans with attention to detail

⦁Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to engage, inspire, and motivate

⦁Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with teammates and external partners

⦁Desire to work hard in a balanced, extended school calendar 

⦁Utmost personal and professional integrity

⦁Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited four-year institution
